Summary

The Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania approached us with a rare challenge: in addition to rebuilding their website, how could they digitally archive Pennsylvania's history in a way that would allow visitors to search by name? Especially considering that most of their documents are from the 1800s and have never been digitized?

We started with Drupal and built out a robust search framework using Apache Solr, the current industry-leading technology for full text searching. The interesting part, however, is that we also added a custom Drupal module that used optical character recognition to digitally scan uploaded documents so that 100-year-old type-written pages could be made searchable by their website.

In addition to building the website and associated search functionality, we also implemented CiviCRM, which is a robust management tool for non-profits. With CiviCRM, the Genealogical Society can manage their member accounts, take membership payments online, and manage events and event registrations.
